History & Origins
Captain Max von Stephanitz developed the German Shepherd in 1899 in Germany, aiming to create the ideal herding dog. He purchased a dog named Horand von Grafrath, which became the first registered German Shepherd. The breed quickly transitioned from herding to police and military work during World War I.
